Accenture alternatives for mid-size companies: who sets up AI if you're not in the Fortune 500
The big consultancies now sell AI setup work, mostly to the largest firms. Here are the options for companies with 50 to 500 people. Prices and timelines where they're public.
Short answer: Accenture, McKinsey and the other big firms now sell AI setup work. But they mostly sell it to the biggest firms, to states and to private equity groups. A company with 50 to 500 people has other options. There are mid-size firms like RSM and West Monroe. There are Microsoft partners and AI agencies. And there are fixed-price setups like Renvel.
What the big firms launched this autumn
The AI labs and large consultancies all moved into setup work in the last few weeks:
- Accenture started engineer programs with Workday (13 Oct 2026) and Google (19 Oct 2026). The Workday one puts engineers inside client HR and finance teams. The Google one targets US federal agencies.
- McKinsey teamed up with Parloa on customer service agents (28 Oct 2026).
- Anthropic and Hg started a consultancy that places AI engineers inside companies, starting in London and Berlin (reported 23 Oct 2026). Its clients are mostly software firms and white-collar businesses in Hg's group.
- AWS runs a $1B engineer unit with a 45-day method (June 2026).
- OpenAI formed a deployment company with hundreds of engineers (May 2026).
None of these named mid-size operating companies as a target. None published a price.
Why mid-size companies get left out
It's not personal. It's math. A team of senior engineers and consultants is expensive. So the big firms point it at the biggest buyers.
A company of 200 people has the same problems:
- orders typed by hand;
- reports that take a day;
- AI licenses nobody uses.
But it can't fund a long program with a big team.
The alternatives
| Option | Who it suits | Public price | Stated speed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accenture, Deloitte, McKinsey | The largest firms; big change programs | Not public | Not public | Strong brand; long programs |
| AWS, OpenAI, Anthropic + Hg | Large firms; their own platform customers | Not public | AWS: 45 days | Tied to one AI vendor |
| RSM, BDO | Firms that already use them for audit, tax or advice | Not public | Not public | Named by ChatGPT for mid-market AI (4 Nov 2026) |
| West Monroe, Slalom | Mid-market firms with change programs | Not public | Not public | Named by ChatGPT for mid-market AI (4 Nov 2026) |
| HatchWorks, RTS Labs, LeewayHertz | Custom software and AI builds | Not public | Not public | Named by ChatGPT for mid-market AI (4 Nov 2026) |
| Microsoft partners | Microsoft 365 companies | Listed on Microsoft Marketplace | e.g. "2–3 Copilot agents in 4–6 weeks" (Kumo Partners) | Microsoft added a "Frontier Partner" track on 6 Oct 2026 |
| AI agencies | Small firms; simple workflows | Guides: $3–10K + $1–3K/month (undated) | Varies | Quality varies a lot |
| Renvel | 50–500 people; operations, sales, reporting | Free audit; $4,900 First Agent; $25K + $5K/month Deploy | 7 days for the first agent; 30 days for the full setup, or the fee back | You own the code, rules and logs |
How to choose
Pick a big firm if…
- the AI work is part of a large change program;
- you're rolling out a new ERP across many countries;
- your board wants a famous name on the report.
Pick a mid-market consultancy if…
- you already trust them with your books or your strategy;
- the project is mostly about people and process, with some AI.
Pick a Microsoft partner if…
- your company runs on Microsoft 365;
- the jobs you want to automate live mostly inside Outlook, Teams and Excel.
Pick an agency if…
- you have one simple workflow and a small budget;
- you can check their past work yourself.
Pick Renvel if…
- you have 50 to 500 people;
- a few jobs eat hours every day (orders, reports, follow-ups);
- you want a fixed price, a date, and to own what's built.
Don't pick Renvel if…
- you need a full ERP rollout;
- you need a large team on site for months;
- your only job is tiny enough for a $3K agency fix.
Five questions that sort them out
- What's the price, in writing? If they can't give one after a 30-minute call, expect a long sales cycle.
- What's live on day 30? Ask for the list, not a slide.
- What happens if you miss the date? Most say nothing. Some give money back.
- Who keeps it running in month 7? Ask for a name.
- What do we own if we leave? A Gartner forecast quoted on X said 70% of firms will drop AI built by vendor engineers by 2028, because costs rise and clients get stuck (26 Oct 2026). Ownership protects you.
The real gap
Most surveys this autumn say the same thing. Companies bought AI. Nothing changed.
- Only 13% of IT chiefs say AI gave real value (Gartner, 19 Oct 2026).
- Only 28% see strongly positive returns (Wharton, 13 Oct 2026).
- More than 80% of AI spend sits outside IT budgets (BCG, 6 Oct 2026). So the CEO, not IT, picks the partner.
Mid-size companies don't need a smaller version of a big program. They need one job done well, then the next.

Questions people ask
- Does Accenture work with mid-size companies?
- It can, but its new AI programs are aimed at large clients. Its October programs with Workday and Google target big HR, finance and government teams.
- What are the alternatives to big consultancies for AI?
- Mid-market firms like RSM, BDO, West Monroe and Slalom. Software builders like HatchWorks. Microsoft partners. AI agencies. And fixed-price setups like Renvel.
- Are smaller AI partners riskier?
- They can be. Ask for a written date, a price, a reference, and what you own if they disappear. A good small partner answers all four on the first call.
- Why don't big consultancies publish prices?
- Their work is scoped per client and often runs for months. That suits large programs. It makes it hard for a mid-size buyer to compare.
- What does Renvel do differently from a consultancy?
- We sell a fixed package with a public price: first agent in 7 days for $4,900, full setup in 30 days for $25K plus $5K a month, or the setup fee back. You own all of it.
- When should a mid-size company still pick a big firm?
- When the AI work is part of a big change. Say, a new ERP in many countries. Or when the board wants a famous name on the report.
