How much does AI implementation cost in 2027?
Real price ranges for putting AI to work in a mid-size company. Licenses, agencies, hiring an engineer, big consulting firms and fixed-price setups. With dated sources.
Short answer: for a company of 50 to 500 people, putting AI to work usually costs $10K to $100K in year one. Simple agency setups start at $3K to $10K plus a monthly fee. Renvel Deploy is $25K plus $5K a month. One AI engineer costs about $220K a year.
Below are the main options, what each one costs, and what it leaves out.
Price ranges at a glance
| Option | Upfront | Monthly | What you get | Source (date) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI licenses only | $0 | $15–$550 per person | Tools for each person. No one sets them up for a job | Town price page; OpenAI plans; Salesforce editions (Sept 2026) |
| AI automation agency | $3K–$10K | $1K–$3K | One or a few simple workflows | Agency price guides (undated, rough) |
| Custom agents from an agency | $5K–$25K | $1K–$5K | Agents built for your jobs | Agency price guides (undated, rough) |
| Renvel First Agent | $4,900 | — | One agent live on one real job in 7 days | renvel.ai (Nov 2026) |
| Renvel Deploy | $25K (First Agent counts toward it) | $5K | Data connected, 3–5 agents, savings board; live in 30 days or the setup fee back | renvel.ai (Nov 2026) |
| Renvel Run | — | From $15K | We operate it with a named person accountable | renvel.ai (Nov 2026) |
| Hire an AI engineer | Hiring costs | ~$18K (about $220K a year) | One person, full time | FDE job trackers (30 Oct 2026) |
| Big consultancy | Not public | Not public | Large programs for large firms | No public prices found |
| Pay per result | Varies | Per outcome | You pay when the job is done | Sierra (30 Oct 2026) |
What each option really costs
AI licenses only
Seat prices vary a lot:
- Town sells team plans at $59 to $149 per seat per month (19 Oct 2026).
- OpenAI's always-on agents ("dots") come with plans from $100 a month.
- Salesforce's editions run $195 to $550 per user per month, plus about $0.10 per agent action (Sept 2026).
The catch: licenses don't do work by themselves. Only 13% of IT chiefs say AI gave real value (Gartner, 19 Oct 2026). An IT team on Reddit summed it up in three words: "Seats nobody uses" (13 Oct 2026).
An AI automation agency
There are thousands of these now. Price guides online put a simple setup at $3K to $10K plus $1K to $3K a month. Custom agents run $5K to $25K plus $1K to $5K a month. These guides have no date, so use them as a rough range.
Good for: one simple workflow in a small firm. Watch for: quality varies a lot, and many agencies are very new.
Hiring an AI engineer
There were 1,276 open jobs for forward-deployed engineers at 547 companies on 30 Oct 2026. The median US pay was about $220K.
Good for: companies with many AI projects and someone to manage the engineer. Watch for: hiring takes months, and one person is a single point of failure.
A big consultancy
Accenture, McKinsey and others now sell AI setup programs. None of them published a price that we could find. They mostly sell to the largest companies.
Good for: very large companies with big change programs.
Renvel
We publish our prices:
- Free audit. 30 minutes, then a written plan in 48 hours.
- First Agent: $4,900, paid up front. One agent live on real work in 7 days.
- Deploy: $25K plus $5K a month. Your data connected, 3 to 5 agents, a savings board. Live in 30 days, or the setup fee back. You own it.
- Run: from $15K a month. We operate it, with a named person accountable.
Year-one math for Deploy: $25K setup + 12 × $5K = $85K. The $4,900 First Agent counts toward the setup.
Good for: companies of 50 to 500 people who want a fixed price and date. Not for: a full ERP rollout, or a single tiny workflow an agency could do for less.
Paying per result
Sierra charges per resolved support case, and nothing when a person has to step in. It passed $400M a year in revenue (30 Oct 2026). Pricing per result is still rare for operations work, like orders entered or invoices checked.
The costs people forget
- Your team's time. Someone has to explain the job and check the work. Plan on about 30 minutes a day in the first week.
- Data cleanup. Only 8% of firms say their data is fully ready for AI (Dun & Bradstreet, 28 Oct 2026). Clean only what the first job needs.
- AI model usage. Agents that run all day cost money to run. Ask if it's included.
- Keeping it running. Rules change. Staff leave. Ask who fixes it in month 7.
- Lock-in. If you can't leave, the price can go up. Ask what you own.
How to compare quotes
Put every quote in the same table:
| Question | Partner A | Partner B | Partner C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total year-one cost | |||
| Date the first job goes live | |||
| What happens if they miss it | |||
| Model usage included? | |||
| Who owns the code and rules | |||
| How savings are measured |
A cheap quote with no date is often the most expensive one.
Is it worth it?
Spend is rising fast. Menlo says companies spent $177B on AI this year, 5.4 times more than last year (3 Nov 2026). BCG says AI spend is now 3.3% of revenue on average, up from 1.7% (6 Oct 2026).
But results lag. Wharton found only 28% see strongly positive returns (13 Oct 2026).
The gap is not the price. It's whether the AI gets a real job. Pick one job that costs hours every day. Time it. Put AI on it. Measure again.

Questions people ask
- How much does AI implementation cost for a mid-size company?
- Most fall between $10K and $100K in year one. Simple agency setups start around $3K to $10K plus a monthly fee. A full done-for-you setup like Renvel Deploy is $25K plus $5K a month.
- Is it cheaper to hire an AI engineer?
- Not in year one. The median US pay for a forward-deployed engineer is about $220K (30 Oct 2026), before hiring costs and tools. It makes sense once you have many AI projects.
- Why do most AI firms hide their prices?
- Every company is different, so many firms price after a meeting. That makes it hard to compare. Ask for a written price and a go-live date before the second call.
- What hidden costs should I plan for?
- Your team's time, data cleanup, AI model usage, and keeping the system running after launch. Ask your partner which of these are included.
- Can I pay per result instead?
- Sometimes. Sierra charges per resolved support case. Outcome pricing for operations work is still rare. Renvel offers it on request for the Run plan.
- What is the cheapest way to test AI on real work?
- A small paid test on one job. Renvel's First Agent is $4,900 for one agent live in 7 days, and it counts toward the full setup if you go ahead.
- Do AI licenses alone pay off?
- Rarely on their own. Only 13% of IT chiefs say AI gave real value (Gartner, 19 Oct 2026). Licenses help when someone points them at a specific job.
